FAQs

    Expand/Close
  • What is the difference between copyediting and proofreading?

What many people call 'proofreading' is actually copyediting.

Copyediting is checking a manuscript for errors, inconsistencies, style, grammar, punctuation, etc. Copyediting is done late in the production of a document.

Proofreading is done even later than copyediting. It involves checking the typeset file that has already been laid out in a print-ready form. As well as last-minute corrections to the text, proofreaders also check for correct pagination, font styles, margins, table of contents, and other such potential formatting issues.

There are a few other types of editing, such as book coaching and developmental editing, that are done earlier in the process, but here at Centauri Publishing Services we specialise in those late-stage editing tasks.

  • Do you do developmental editing?

No, not at this time. We specialise in the later stages of editing.

  • Do you publish books?

No, we are not a publishing imprint.

  • What is a style sheet?

A style sheet is a document that is usually prepared by the copyeditor. It contains the fixed styles that the publisher will be using, usually based on a published style manual such as The Chicago Manual of Style. It also includes lists of character and place names (for fiction and narrative non-fiction), and terms and jargon used in the particular manuscript. Attention is paid to acronyms and capitalisation. If the author has particular styles or quirks to their writing, these are also noted.

The style sheet is used as a reference document by the copyeditor and proofreader to ensure that the writing style is consistent throughout the manuscript. Particularly for long documents, it may take the editor weeks to get to the end, and without a style sheet, they may make different editing choices at the end than they did at the beginning.

A style sheet can also be used by the author. It is particularly useful for authors who are writing a series of books.

In our style sheet service, we prepare a style sheet that can be used by you to self-edit your own manuscript, if your budget doesn't stretch to a full editing service. Our style sheet comes with tailored recommendations and a list of tips that will help you apply the styles to your work.
